Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany says his team is fully focused on their Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen, not the upcoming Champions League playoff against Celtic.
Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany said the team is only thinking about Friday’s Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen and not next week’s Champions League playoff against Celtic.
Bayern is leading the league with a six-point gap. Bayer Leverkusen is second with 45 points. Since Bayern did not qualify directly for the Champions League last 16, they will now play Celtic in Glasgow on Wednesday in the first leg of the playoff.
“In terms of structure, Werder Bremen and Celtic are different,” Kompany said in a press conference. “But right now, we are only thinking about Bremen. The only game we can win tomorrow is against Bremen, not Celtic. So, our focus is on Bremen.”
Bayern is determined to regain their dominance after Leverkusen won the league and Cup double last season, leaving Bayern without a trophy for the first time in 15 years.

Despite leading the title race, Bayern has had some defensive problems. Last week, they conceded three goals in 28 minutes against Holstein Kiel but still won 4-3 after leading 4-0. They also lost 3-0 to Feyenoord in January, even though they controlled most of the game.
“They were different matches,” Kompany said. “In one, we were leading 4-0; in the other, every moment mattered. Every moment in the season is important for success, but it’s not easy. We are human.”
He also defended Bayern’s defense, saying, “Right now, every team in Germany has conceded more goals than us. But we have still let in goals, and that’s the truth. Being perfect is not easy, but that is our goal.”
