De’Aaron Fox’s Preferred Trade Destination? Spurs Reportedly His Top Choice

Sacramento Kings star De’Aaron Fox is reportedly eyeing a trade to the San Antonio Spurs ahead of the Feb. 6 deadline. Would a Fox-Wemby duo make sense for San Antonio?

The Sacramento Kings could be facing a major shake-up before the Feb. 6 trade deadline, and star point guard De’Aaron Fox may be on the move. If that happens, his “preferred landing spot” is reportedly the San Antonio Spurs, according to Kings reporter James Ham.

While teams like the Brooklyn Nets and Houston Rockets have also been linked to Fox, Ian Begley of SNY reported that “several opposing teams monitoring the Fox/Sacramento situation believed San Antonio was among the teams he’d like to play for.”

Why Would Fox Want to Join the Spurs?

It’s easy to see why Fox could be drawn to San Antonio. The team has a rising superstar in Victor Wembanyama, along with a promising young core featuring Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, Keldon Johnson, Stephon Castle, and Julian Champagnie.

A Fox-Wemby pick-and-roll would be electric. Fox is averaging 25.2 points and 6.2 assists per game in this season and remaining one of the most dynamic point guards in the league.

Meanwhile, Wemby is dominating on both the ends, posting 24.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and a league-best 3.9 blocks per game. He’s also hitting 35.3% of his three-pointers, making him one of the most versatile bigs in the NBA.

Do the Spurs Have the Assets to Trade for Fox?

The good news for San Antonio? They have plenty of future draft capital to make a deal happen:

2025: Own first-rounder, Atlanta’s unprotected first, Chicago’s protected first (1-10), Charlotte’s protected first (1-14).

2026: Own first-rounder, swap rights with Atlanta.

2027: Own first-rounder, Atlanta’s unprotected first.

2028: Own first-rounder, swap rights with Boston (protected for No. 1).

2029-2031: Multiple first-round picks and swap rights, including an unprotected Minnesota pick in 2031.

Even if the Spurs had to give up some of these assets to acquire Fox, they’d still have plenty left to chase another star down the road.

Should the Spurs Make a Move Now?

The big question for San Antonio is timing. Wemby is only 21 and still developing, while Fox is in his prime. The Spurs currently sit at 20-23, outside the Play-In Tournament in the tough Western Conference.

San Antonio could play the long game, keeping its draft assets and potentially landing top prospects like Cooper Flagg, A.J. Dybantsa, Dylan Harper, or Cameron Boozer in the next few drafts—players who better align with Wemby’s timeline.

That said, at some point, the Spurs will need to add more star power around Wemby.

Fox could be a perfect fit, but whether San Antonio is ready to make a win-now move remains interesting.

Would the Spurs pull the trigger on a blockbuster trade for the Fox, or will they wait and build through the draft? The next few weeks will be crucial in shaping their future.
