J.T. Miller Headed Back to New York

J.T. Miller is traded back to the New York Rangers from the Canucks. Read the details on the players, picks, and what’s next for the NHL veteran.

J.T. Miller is reportedly making his way back to Manhattan. According to Frank Seravalli from the Daily Faceoff, the New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks have agreed on a trade that brings Miller back to where his NHL career kicked off in 2013.

Deal of Miller to New York

The deal sends Miller to New York, while the Canucks also ship defenseman Erik Brännström and NCAA prospect Jackson Dorrington to the Rangers, as reported by Larry Brooks of the New York Post.

In exchange, the Canucks will receive veteran center Filip Chytil, rookie defenseman Victor Mancini, and a protected 2025 first-round pick. As Brooks, Seravalli, and ESPN’s Emily Kaplan noted, the pick is “top-13 protected” and could slide to 2026, per Seravalli.

Miller is expected to join the Rangers for their game against the Boston Bruins on Saturday night, according to Kaplan. This news comes after The Athletic’s Rick Dhaliwal mentioned that Miller was set to be scratched for the Canucks’ Friday night game against the Dallas Stars.

Interestingly, Miller had a full no-move clause on his contract, which he would have needed to waive to make this deal happen.

The alternate captain has been at the center of trade rumors all season, especially following reports of a rift between him and Canucks defenseman Elias Pettersson. Miller has previously told reporters the feud was “created” by the media.

Canucks turned down a trade offer for Miller

Earlier in January, The Athletic’s Josh Yohe reported that the Canucks turned down a trade offer for Miller that would have sent Mika Zibanejad to Vancouver. Later on, Friedman added that the talks stalled because the Canucks didn’t include Braden Schneider in the deal.

There was even talk of a trade involving the Rangers before a home game against the Edmonton Oilers on Jan. 18, as Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman revealed. That deal “would have involved multiple players and draft picks,” according to ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski.

The Canucks had also explored trade scenarios involving Pettersson, Wyshynski noted. But after the latest negotiations with the Rangers, it looks like Miller will be leaving Vancouver less than a year after he helped lead the team to the second round, marking the best season of his career.

Last season, Miller paced the Canucks with 103 points in 81 games, helping the team win 50 games for the first time since the Henrik and Daniel Sedin era. Even though the Canucks were eliminated in seven games by the Edmonton Oilers on their way to the Stanley Cup Finals, there was hope that Quinn Hughes’ squad would bounce back for a deeper run in 2025.

Unfortunately for Vancouver, injury troubles have been piling up. With issues like the extended absence of starting netminder Thatcher Demko and the ongoing scrutiny over the Miller-Pettersson relationship, things haven’t been going well. The Canucks, reigning Pacific Division leaders, are now fighting for a Wild Card spot as the trade deadline looms.

Miller with the Canucks

Miller, who has been with the Canucks since being traded from the Tampa Bay Lightning before the 2019-20 season, has seen his production drop early in the 2024-25 season to nine goals and 26 assists for 35 points in 40 games. He previously had three straight 30-goal seasons.

Now, back with the Rangers, Miller is expected to take on a bigger role. The Rangers, like the Canucks, are currently in a Wild Card race after a slow start. They hope that a revamped top six will spark a playoff push in the second half of the season.

Adding Miller’s contract is a big move, as his deal runs through the 2029-30 season. It includes a full no-trade clause through 2026-27 and a 15-team no-trade list for the final three years, as noted by Spotrac.

It looks like a new chapter begins for Miller as he heads back to where it all started.
