Packers’ Jaire Alexander Drawing Trade Buzz, Chargers Named as Potential Landing Spot

With Jaire Alexander’s future in Green Bay uncertain, speculation heats up about a possible trade. ESPN links the Pro Bowl corner to the Chargers, who could use his skillset in Jesse Minter’s defense.

Brief Summary:
Jaire Alexander’s future with the Packers is uncertain due to injury concerns and a hefty cap hit. While a mutual understanding exists between player and team, trade rumors are swirling — with the Chargers emerging as a potential destination.

One of the biggest offseason questions hanging over the Green Bay Packers? What happens next with star cornerback Jaire Alexander.

The veteran DB has one year left on his current deal, set to make just over $16 million in 2024 — with a hefty $24 million cap hit, per Spotrac. Add in the fact that injuries have limited him to just 14 games over the past two seasons, and it’s no surprise that whispers of a potential trade are getting louder.

And according to ESPN’s Matt Bowen, there’s already one team that might make a lot of sense: the Los Angeles Chargers.

“The Chargers signed Donte Jackson to a two-year deal and Benjamin St-Juste to a one-year contract this offseason,” Bowen wrote. “However, if Alexander is available in a trade, he would be seen as an upgrade in Jesse Minter’s defensive system. The Chargers are zone heavy, playing both single-high Cover 3 and split-safety schemes. Alexander has the play instincts and foot quickness to match routes, and his transition speed allows him to make plays on the ball. Alexander has intercepted 12 passes and broken up 57 in his career.”

It’s a fit that checks a lot of boxes. New Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh is expected to bring a gritty, aggressive style of play, and his defensive coordinator Jesse Minter — fresh off a national title run at Michigan — values quick, instinctive DBs who can thrive in zone coverage. That’s right in Alexander’s wheelhouse.

Earlier this month, NFL insider Josina Anderson added fuel to the speculation, reporting that there’s already a “mutual understanding” between the Packers and Alexander to sort out his contract and roster situation before he reports for offseason activities.

Anderson also noted that at least two other teams are keeping a close eye on the situation, though she didn’t name names.

If Alexander can stay healthy, he could be a game-changer for a Chargers defense that’s still building its identity. For now, the Packers are holding their cards close — but don’t be shocked if his name keeps popping up in trade rumors as the offseason heats up.
