Deion Sanders Unlikely to Pursue Cowboys Head Coaching Job

While Jerry Jones and Deion Sanders have spoken, the Cowboys are not expected to formally interview Coach Prime for their head coaching vacancy, as Sanders appears poised to remain at Colorado.

Deion Sanders, head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, is not expected to formally interview for the Dallas Cowboys’ head coaching vacancy, despite conversations with team owner Jerry Jones, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

“Nothing scheduled yet with Coach Prime,” Rapoport said. “I’d be surprised, probably very surprised, if something did in fact get scheduled.”

Speculation Around Sanders and Dallas

Reports suggest Sanders might be leveraging the reported interest from Dallas to secure a more lucrative extension at Colorado.

NFL reporter Josina Anderson indicated this strategy is common among college coaches seeking pay raises, and there is speculation that Colorado has already extended Sanders an offer.

For now, the Cowboys appear focused on other candidates.

They have already interviewed former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh and Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore

Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier is also set to interview.

Dallas’ Head Coaching Vacancy

The Cowboys are searching for a new head coach after parting ways with Mike McCarthy following a disappointing 7-10 season.

During McCarthy’s five-year tenure, Dallas made the playoffs three times but managed just one postseason victory.

The position is appealing in some respects, with stars like Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons leading the roster.

However, the team’s shortcomings in 2024 highlighted weaknesses beyond its top-heavy talent pool.

Further complicating the role is Jerry Jones’ hands-on management style, which has historically caused friction with head coaches.

Is Coach Prime Interested?

While Sanders has brought significant attention and success to Colorado, it’s unclear if he’s ready to take on the challenges of coaching the Cowboys.

The franchise’s storied history is balanced by high expectations and intense scrutiny under Jones’ ownership.

For now, it appears Sanders will remain at Colorado, potentially with a more lucrative deal in hand.

The Cowboys, meanwhile, continue their search for a leader who can return the team to championship contention.
