Cowboys Hire Klayton Adams as New Offensive Coordinator

The Dallas Cowboys have hired Klayton Adams as their new offensive coordinator. The move suggests a bigger focus on the running game in 2025.

Cowboys Hire Klayton Adams as New Offensive Coordinator

The Dallas Cowboys have hired Arizona Cardinals offensive line coach Klayton Adams as their new offensive coordinator, the team announced on Saturday.

Adams replaces Brian Schottenheimer, who was promoted to head coach last month after the Cowboys parted ways with Mike McCarthy.

This hiring suggests the Cowboys may focus more on their running game next season. Adams, 41, worked with the Cardinals for two seasons and previously spent four years with the Indianapolis Colts as an assistant offensive line coach (2019-20) and tight ends coach (2021-22).

Under Adams, the Cardinals ranked seventh in the NFL in rushing yards in 2024, averaging 144.2 yards per game. They also ranked 11th in total offense. In contrast, the Cowboys struggled in the running game, ranking 27th with 100.3 rushing yards per game and scoring the fewest rushing touchdowns in the league (six).

Could Dallas Draft a Top Running Back?

With the NFL Draft coming in April, one player linked to the Cowboys is Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty. He led the nation with 2,601 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns last season, finishing second in Heisman Trophy voting.

Dallas has the 12th overall pick in the first round after finishing the 2024 season with a 7-10 record.

Schottenheimer to Call Plays

Although Adams will lead the offense in 2025, Schottenheimer is expected to call the plays, just like McCarthy did last season.

The Cowboys also plan to hire an offensive line coach under Adams, as Mike Solari held the role for the past two seasons. With nine-time Pro Bowl guard Zack Martin set to become a free agent, Dallas may make major changes to its offensive line.

Other candidates reportedly considered for the offensive coordinator job included Detroit Lions assistant head coach Scottie Montgomery, former Browns OC Ken Dorsey, and Falcons tight ends coach Kevin Koger.
