The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly set to hire Brian Schottenheimer as their next head coach, raising questions about the franchise’s future under Jerry Jones.
The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly finalizing a deal to hire Brian Schottenheimer as their next head coach, according to Clarence Hill Jr. of DLLS Sports.
Hill reported Thursday:
“Look for the Cowboys to cross the finish line on hiring Brian Schottenheimer no later than Friday, possibly today.”
NFL insider Josina Anderson also shared that other head coach candidates have been told they likely won’t get second interviews.
Discussions with Schottenheimer reportedly “heated up” earlier this week, according to Yahoo Sports‘ Jori Epstein.
The #Cowboys met with OC Brian Schottenheimer for more than 5 hours yesterday in what was their 2nd interview this week with him. When asked if this was imminent or whether news expected today, I was told “nothing as of yet” per a source informed. The wait continues.

If the deal is completed soon, it wouldn’t be a total surprise given Schottenheimer’s recent work with the team.

Schottenheimer has spent the last two years as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator, but he’s never been a head coach at any level.
His track record as an offensive coordinator is mixed, with only two of his offenses finishing in the top 10 in total yards over 14 seasons.
After Mike McCarthy’s exit, there were reports that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expected McCarthy to return and didn’t have a clear backup plan if he didn’t sign a new contract.
That lack of preparation seems to be reflected in how the coaching search has unfolded.
This hire, if finalized, raises concerns about the Cowboys’ direction under Jones.
It’s been almost 30 years since Dallas last appeared in a conference championship game—the longest drought of any NFC team.
With the resources and advantages Dallas has, such poor results suggest a mix of bad ownership and questionable front-office decisions.
Bringing in Schottenheimer might just reinforce doubts about whether Jones can guide the Cowboys back to NFL prominence.
Fans are left wondering if the glory days of America’s Team are gone for good.
