Chicago Bears Set to Employ Dennis Allen as Defensive Coordinator for the 2025 Season

Former head coach of the Saints, Dennis Allen, has signed on with the Chicago Bears as their new defensive coordinator. Let’s see what his expertise will bring to the team ahead of the 2025 season.

The Chicago Bears are looking to bolster the staff of their newly appointed head coach, Ben Johnson, with an impactful addition.

Dennis Allen, the previous head coach for the New Orleans Saints, will take up the Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator position.

New Chicago Bears head coach Johnson will likely benefit from his expertise, which has been described by Rapoport as that of a ‘respected guru.’

Dennis Allen has made a name for himself in football on the defensive side of the ball. His most recent positions are with the Oakland Raiders, whom he coached from 2012 to 2014, and the Saints, whom he coached from 2022 to 2024.

Unfortunately, his record demonstrates that he did not excel in that role, as he finished with a negative record and no playoff appearances at 26 and 53 over those years. Still, he has enjoyed success in the past as a defensive coordinator.

People may remember Allen from the Falcons, where he worked as a defensive assistant, along with his stints with the Saints.

In 2011, he was the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos, and his efforts took the team to the AFC Divisional round.

From 2016 to 2021, Allen was the defensive coordinator for the Saints. He qualified for the playoffs four straight seasons, reached the NFC Championship Game in 2018, and crafted some of the best defenses in his final years in the position.

Particularly after being ranked 27th in yards given up last season, the Bears could use Allen’s expertise.

Yet, all the focus appears to be on the offense with new developments like coach Johnson and quarterback Caleb Williams coming in.

A more vigorous defense is equally essential if the Bears wish to be successful in the ferocious NFC North.

Suppose Allen’s leadership is as instrumental as it has been. In that case, the defense will take massive steps forward in the anticipated 2025 season.
