Legendary coach Dawn Staley inks a $25 million extension with South Carolina through 2030, becoming the highest-paid coach in women’s college basketball.

South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley has solidified her place in Columbia for the foreseeable future.

The university announced that Staley signed a contract extension worth $25.2 million, keeping her with the program until 2030.

The deal, which makes Staley the highest-paid coach in women’s college basketball, includes a $250,000 annual salary increase and a $500,000 signing bonus.

Staley’s Reaction

Staley expressed gratitude for the university’s commitment to women’s basketball in a statement:

“I’m proud to represent the University of South Carolina and of its investment in women’s basketball. What we’ve been able to accomplish on the court is a testament to what can happen when you bring together the right people… and have the right commitment from the University, the Athletics Department, and the community.”

She credited players, staff, and fans for their roles in building a championship-caliber program and pledged to continue setting an example of how investing in women’s sports can lead to significant success.

A Historic Pay Raise

Previously, LSU coach Kim Mulkey held the title of the highest-paid women’s basketball coach, earning $3.264 million annually.

Staley’s new contract eclipses that figure, significantly surpassing her previous salary of $3.1 million per season, which she shared with UConn’s Geno Auriemma.

A Legacy of Excellence

Since joining South Carolina in 2008, Staley has amassed a record of 457-107, leading the Gamecocks to:

  • 13 NCAA Tournament appearances
  • Four Final Fours
  • Three National Championships

South Carolina remains a powerhouse under Staley’s leadership, entering the 2024-25 season as defending champions with a 17-1 start.

Looking Ahead

This extension keeps Staley at the helm of the Gamecocks through the 2029-30 season, positioning South Carolina to maintain its dominance in women’s college basketball.

The move underscores the university’s belief in her vision and their commitment to fostering a winning culture.

As the highest-paid coach in the sport, Staley’s success is a testament to the growing recognition and investment in women’s athletics.
