As per reports, Trey Mancini is making another comeback, signing a minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The veteran slugger aims to return to the majors after a year away.
Reports: Trey Mancini is making another attempt at a major league comeback. On Friday, he signed a minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to multiple reports. The deal includes an invite to spring training.
Mancini, a veteran first baseman and outfielder, did not play in the 2023 season. He had signed a minor league deal with the Miami Marlins but opted out in March.
This isn’t his first comeback. In 2021, while playing for the Baltimore Orioles, Mancini returned after missing the entire 2020 season while battling stage 3 colon cancer.

The 32-year-old last played in the majors with the Chicago Cubs before being designated for assignment in August 2023.
Over his seven-season career (831 games), Mancini has hit 129 home runs and recorded 400 RBIs. He has a .263 batting average and a .775 OPS. His best season came in 2019 with the Orioles, when he hit 35 home runs and drove in 97 runs.
Mancini debuted with Baltimore in 2016 and remained with the team until the 2022 trade deadline when he was sent to the Houston Astros. He won a World Series title with Houston that year. He then signed a two-year deal with the Cubs in 2023 but struggled, posting a .635 OPS over 79 games before being released.
Now, he will compete for a roster spot on a Diamondbacks team that led MLB with 886 runs scored last season.
Arizona’s first base position seems set after the team acquired Josh Naylor in December. The Diamondbacks also have six outfielders lined up for the Opening Day roster, including All-Star Corbin Carroll.
The team’s pitchers and catchers will report for spring training on February 12, with the first full workout scheduled for February 17. Arizona will play its first Cactus League game on February 21.
