Jeff Torborg, Former MLB Manager and Catcher, Dies at 83

Jeff Torborg, former MLB catcher and manager, known for catching Sandy Koufax’s perfect game and managing the White Sox and Mets, dies at 83.

Jeff Torborg, a former MLB catcher who transitioned into a successful managerial and coaching career, passed away at the age of 83, the Chicago White Sox announced Sunday. 

Torborg had been battling Parkinson’s disease in recent years, though no cause of death was immediately disclosed.

Born in Westfield, N.J., Torborg spent his 10-year playing career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels

He was part of baseball history as the catcher for Sandy Koufax’s perfect game in 1965 and one of Nolan Ryan’s seven no-hitters.

Managerial Career Highlights

Torborg’s managerial career began with the Cleveland Indians from 1977-79, but his most notable success came with the Chicago White Sox from 1989-91. 

In 1990, he led the team to 94 wins, earning the title of American League Manager of the Year.

He also managed the New York Mets, Montreal Expos, and Florida Marlins

His tenure with the Mets from 1992-93 was challenging, with the team finishing 70-92 in 1992 and earning the dubious nickname “The Worst Team Money Could Buy”

Torborg was dismissed early in the 1993 season after a 13-25 start.

In 2003, he was let go by the Marlins after a slow start, but his successor, Jack McKeon, went on to lead the team to a World Series title.

Coaching and Broadcasting

Torborg spent nearly a decade coaching for the New York Yankees in various roles, including bullpen coach and pitching coach during the 1980s. 

He later transitioned to broadcasting, working with Fox and CBS Radio. From 1995-97, he teamed up with Vin Scully to cover the World Series for CBS Radio.

Legacy

Beyond his achievements on the field and in the dugout, Torborg was a respected figure in baseball, remembered for his contributions to the game and his leadership during both highs and lows.

He leaves behind a legacy of dedication to baseball, from catching historic moments to managing teams through challenging periods. His impact on the sport will not be forgotten.
